A statewide survey of 1,200 Texas voters* done in March 2006 found a strong belief among citizens that the state should fund high-quality pre-k programs for all children, with a vast majority believing that high-quality pre-k programs positively influence children’s later educational outcomes. Highlights of the survey results include:
- Over two-thirds (68%) of voters believe that the state government has the responsibility to provide high-quality pre-k programs to help children prepare for success in K-12 education, and nearly three in four (72%) voters believe that these programs should be fully funded for all young children, regardless of income.
- Eighty-three percent of voters would support increased revenue if needed to fund pre-k programs for all young children.
- Three in four voters said they would be more likely to support a candidate running for public office if he or she supported making quality pre-k available to all children in Texas. This includes majorities of voters from all party affiliations and all areas of the state.
The survey was conducted for Pre-K Now and the United Ways of Texas by Impact Texas Communications, LLP.
* In addition to the statewide sample, additional voters were surveyed in key regions around the state, including Harris County, Dallas and Tarrant Counties, 48 Central Texas Counties, and 49 East Texas Counties.
